Resizing Images (Photos & Layouts) for Web:- In Photoshop, with your document open, go to Image > Resize > Image Size (Image > Image Size in CS3).
- In the Image Size dialog box that comes up, under Document Size, go to Resolution and change the value there to 72 (in case this isn't set yet) and make sure the box beside it indicates pixels/inch (ppi) as the unit.
- Check all three boxes under it (Scale Styles, Constrain Proportions, Resample Image).
- In the dropdown box beside Resample Image, hit the arrow to get the dropdown menu and choose Bicubic Sharper.
- Now go back up to the top of the Image Size box and look at the pixel values. If you are resizing a layout, it probably resized itself to 864 x 864. If so, great! Move on to step 6. If you are resizing a photo that came straight out of your camera, change the largest value in your photo's dimensions to something less than 1000 (for web files I like around 600).You'll notice the other dimension change as well.
- Click OK. You should see your image decrease radically in size on your workspace. Don't worry... it's supposed to.
- Go to File > Save for Web & Devices.
- In the dialog box that comes up, make sure that you have .jpeg as the filetype chosen (not .gif)
- Click on Save.
- IMPORTANT: Rename your image file to something OTHER than your original file. Otherwise, this websized file will save over your original file, and you will not be able to print out the file nor use it for anything other than the web (because it will be very pixelated and poor in quality... and you won't be able to upsize it back to its original form).
Uploading Images to Galleries:- From the Home page, go to Gallery. Click on Upload file.
- In the dialog box that comes up, click on the first Browse button under File Uploads.
- Navigate to the area on your hard drive where you saved your web-sized file. Select it.
- Click Continue. You should get a message that says your upload was successful. Click Continue.
- A dialog box will come up where you can input your details. Make sure you specify which album (gallery) you want your file to be uploaded to. Use the dropdown box to choose from the list of galleries. Then fill up the other details (your filename, the description of your file, keywords, and your name).
- Under Supplies Used, input the credits for any digital products you may have used to create your image.
- Click Continue. You should get a message that your file was placed successfully.
- Click Continue again.
A FEW NOTES ABOUT UPLOADING TO PERSONAL ALBUMS: - If you upload a file onto your personal album, there will be no way for others to know that you have uploaded files there unless you tell them so. This is because file thumbnails from personal albums are hidden from the general thumbnail views. Others who wish to view your files in your personal albums will have to do search under your name or enter your personal gallery.
- If you've uploaded to your personal gallery, it will not appear on any other galleries. When you upload, you select from the dropdown box which gallery you want your image to go into, and that's the only place where it goes. So if you want to upload your image to both your personal album *and* the course gallery, you will have to do multiple uploads.
To search for your own uploads:- From the homepage, click on Gallery. Choose the thumbnail of the gallery where you uploaded your photo.
- In the top menu, click on Search
- In the Search dialog box that comes up, uncheck all 3 default checked boxes (Title, Caption, Keywords). Check Owner Name. In the Search box above, type in your username (It has to be your login name).
- Click on the Search button. You should come up with a page (or more, depending on how many you've uploaded) of thumbnails of your uploads. Click on each thumbnail in order to view the contents and comments.
