Shelly,

I tried it once, just brushing in some whiter white on my teeth and it came out scary.

Thank goodness we can undo.

You could probably try brushing over with white, but lower the opacity in your brush options to something low (maybe between 5 & 10%).

I think in PSE7 there is a "helper" panel for doing this, but I've never used it.

Or, I'm sure that Scott Kelby covers this in is books for digital photographers (these are out for most versions of PSE). I don't have mine handy to look this up. If you have online access through your library you may be able to access an electronic version of the book -- or maybe even a different one.

I think the steps are to create a new layer, fill it with 50% gray, set the blend mode to soft light. Then select your brush tool, and using white, paint over the area you want to lighten. Again, you may need to decrease the opacity of your brush to avoid over-whitening. (I'm not sure these steps are right.) You can use the same technique to darken areas of a photo, but painting with black.

I'm not sure which PSE you have but what I would do and have done now that I have PSE7 is go to CoffeeShop Free PS-PSE Actions website and check out her free actions-some of them like the Perfect Portrait action has the white teeth in it. Some earlier versions can do actions but PSE7 is a bit easier.

A couple of months ago I was looking on YouTube for something else and came across a video on how to whiten teeth with PSE and PS.

You might want to do a YouTube search.

I use the basic technique that Scott Kelby uses in his PSE book. I use the magic wand tool and click on the teeth to make a selection. If I need to refine the selection I use the lasso tool (hold shift to add to selection). Then go to Select > Feather and feather 1 px. to soften the selection. Next, go to Enhance > Adjust Color > Hue/Saturation. Choose Yellow from the Edit drop down menu. Drag the saturation slider to the left to remove yellowing from the teeth. Once you do that, change from Yellow in the Edit menu back to Master, and move the lightness slider to the right to whiten. Don't be too extreme Once you're happy, click OK and then ctrl+d to deselect the teeth! I've used this several times and it's worked like a charm

I use the same process, too. Just don't make them so white they don't look anything like the person. Like with everything, use caution. Sometimes I put the selection on its own layer so I can lower opacity a bit, too.

I love this free action. I use it for teeth sometimes (my own! hahaha) and also for brightening eyes. You gotta be subtle, but the action works so great because it has lots in it but you can just turn off the layers you don't want to use.

But Kari's (Scott's ) way also intrigues me, so I am gonna try that next time just for giggles.

The EASIEST and simplest to control is to select the dodge tool (under the burn hand tool), use an opacity of roughly 50%, select a soft edge brush close to the size of the teeth and just click over the teeth a few times until you get a lighter shade. Don't overdo or the teeth will glow too much. HTH!

Meg,
I guess I'm a little lazy because that is how I usually whiten teeth too. I just keep my opacity down so it is subtle and zoom in. I've also used the Coffeeshop Perfect Portrait 3 action, too!
