Tutorial: Digital Templates

We're going to make a digital scrapbook page! :D I really wanted to share this beautiful craft with you, and I wanted to give you a little sample of what it's like to take a video-based class here at JessicaSprague.com. I've included everything you need (links and downloads) to be able to create the page you see above. Yay!

The best part of this is that you don't need to have any experience with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements to give this technique a try. We'll be using a special kind of "starter" page called a template, which is basically a sketched-out layout, that has been pre-designed, and is only waiting for you to add your own digital patterned papers, photos, and text.

Preparation for Creating a Digital Layout

There are a few things you'll need to get started with our digital page today. First, you'll need a recent copy of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. Then you'll need to download the free digital paper pack I've put together for you. If you like the font in the sample page, you'll want to download and install the font before opening the template file (which is a .psd - Photoshop's native file format). So here are the steps you'll need to take before you get started:

  1. Make sure you have a copy of Photoshop Elements (or Photoshop) - see below
  2. Download the template and free paper pack
  3. Download the free font

Download Photoshop Elements

If you do not own a copy of Photoshop Elements 5, 6, or 7, or Photoshop CS, CS2, or CS3, you can download a free 30-day trial of Photoshop Elements from Adobe.com.

Download the Template and Free Paper Pack

To complete our digital page, you'll need our template file, and some patterned papers. I have the template and four papers I used in the sample page zipped together. You can download them right here:

Click here to download the SIH-TemplateTutorial.zip.

After you download the file, double-click on it, and then (in Windows) click on the Extract All Files link to extract the contents of the zipped file. You can use the template and papers only after you've completely unzipped them.

Supplies in this page generously donated by:

  • Katie Pertiet (designerdigitals.com)
  • Jen Wilson (jenwilsondesigns.com)
  • Jan Crowley (oscraps.com)
  • Meredith Fenwick (twopeasinabucket.com)

Download the Free Font

I used a special grungy typewriter font for this page. You can download it from Dafont.com:

Click here to download VT Portable Remington.

Unzip the font, and then follow the instructions here to install it.

Create Your Digital Page from a Template

Now that we've got everything downloaded, you'll need three horizontal photos, and a couple of paragraphs of journaling. I chose the theme of Creativity, so you can include pictures of things you've created. If you don't have photos of something you've created, you can change the theme of the layout easily by hiding the title layer. :)

Are you ready?

Set?

Here is the VIDEO tutorial for creating a layout from a digital template. Click the image to launch the video in a new window.Close the window to return to this page. You can pause, rewind, and replay the video as many times as you need to.

thank you, thank you, thank you! you so rock! Thanks for making template use easy. I took a template class before at a scrapbook convention, that helped but seeing the tutorial step by step in front of me made the light bulb go on. So much better than watching and trying to remember from a booklet of directions (and yes, I mean booklet). I am signing up for more classes. Thank you so much smilies/smiley.gif

Jessica, I am new to all of this and have so enjoyed learning from your classes. Even though I have been working with computers since 1971, this Photoshop Elements was beyond me...so I have appreciated all of your tricks and explainations very much. Know you are loved and appreciated by many different levels and keep up the good work!! Merci Beaucoup! Allison (from the countryside of France)

I got an email on Tuesday about a layout using templates and so I went on and created a layout using Template #6. OMG - was this awesome. I sat down after work on Tuesday night and created the layout. Thank you so much Jessica for giving this to us. I then went on and found you have great templates in 8.5x11 format which is the size I scrapbook in. So as soon as I have another hour of free time I will definitely be going on to get some of these. I am new at this and your tutorials are so explicit and easy to follow. I learned so much in that one tutorial. Again - THANK YOU!

Okay. I've wanted to try digital scrapping for a long time (have PSE 6 but haven't hardly used it - a little intimidated)...however, this is my holiday gift to myself....use your tutorial, take the plunge and JUST DO IT! I'm really looking forward to your lesson....but I do have a question. I'm using a 64-bit version of Vista. I downloaded The Font Thing, unzipped it but cannot install because it's not compatible with my system. Any idea how to get around this?
