Type-Ology: Art & Science of Type
The Art & Science of Type
Fonts Make Everyone Happy
Type is my VERY FAVORITE design element. Of course I might say that about every design element. But by far the most flexible, and most evocative element we have in our arsenal is typography.
Our Goal: Share Our Love of Typography!
In our Type-ology class we'll study the science of letterforms - their anatomy and the things that distinguish them from one another, how this impacts their overall feel and readability.
But we're also going to go beyond the science and into art. To a certain degree, setting type is an art, a gut-feeling you develop that goes beyond the 'this letterform has a high ascender' and into the ' wow, that makes magic!'. That's our true aim for this class. I can't wait to go on this journey with you! Here's more about what you'll learn, and what to expect.
What To Expect in Class
All of the classes here at JessicaSprague come with gorgeous video instruction, broken down into project-based lessons and individual tasks within each lesson. This bite-sized approach to Photoshop makes it easy to understand, and you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish in just 30 minutes at a time! Our Typology class has ten lessons, where I'll walk you step-by-step through poster projects incorporating type from different styles and time periods into gorgeous projects. You'll be amazed at how much you can do with the techniques I teach, including how to:
Use type and Photoshop brushes together
Choose and use multiple fonts on a single project
Use dingbats as decorations and as pointer-objects
Create a family-themed wood-type poster
Create a detailed collage combining all our type work
And more!
This course also includes a bonus mini album lesson, where you can design your own mini album using the collage we put together in class!
How To Prepare for Class
In addition to your open and excited mind (and nimble mouse-and-keyboard fingers), you'll need any version of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. You'll also need at least a foundational understanding of Photoshop to really enjoy this class. You'll need skills such as opening and closing documents, installing fonts, installing and using Photoshop brushes, and combining files onto a single document. I recommend that you have have taken at least the following:
I'll Be Right There With You
The Type-Ology Workshop is a great introduction into the history and styles of Type. By the end of class, you will have learned how to create different styles of posters, collages and more! How awesome is that? We love to see your works of art, and with every JessicaSprague.com course, there are many different ways to get in touch to show off your art, or ask a question!
